After the launch conference of Xiaopeng GX, Xiaopeng Group Chairman He Xiaopeng made a core judgment in subsequent media interviews that stirred up discussions in the intelligent driving industry. For the future mass production of smart cars, LiDAR is no longer a necessary configuration.
According to current industry public statistics, the proportion of newly released car models with a price of over 150000 yuan in the domestic market equipped with LiDAR is rapidly increasing year after year. When asked if Xiaopeng, who insists on pursuing a purely visual route, will face competition pressure at the industry level as a result, He Xiaopeng's response was very straightforward: we don't have pressure.
He Xiaopeng frankly stated that LiDAR itself is a hardware product with excellent performance, but from the overall perspective of the landing of intelligent driving in automobiles, Xiaopeng believes that it is no longer needed in this route, so the team's choice is very firm.
He also added that laser radar still has high practical value in many other industrial and special operation scenarios, and this judgment is only applicable to the mass production track of civilian intelligent vehicles.
Liu Xianming, the head of Xiaopeng Group's General Intelligence Center, further explained that whether LiDAR is a necessary configuration for intelligent driving depends entirely on the technology stack choices of different enterprises, and there is never an absolute answer in the industry that is either black or white.
For ordinary users, the core of evaluating a car's autonomous driving capability is always to look at the actual road scene usage experience, rather than a pile of sensor paper configuration lists.
Xiaopeng adheres to the pure visual route without laser radar, and its core confidence comes from the actual implementation performance of the second-generation VLA technology solution. Even in extremely harsh weather, dark nights, and extremely complex road conditions, relying on sufficient computing power support, mature end-to-end large model architecture, and high-density visual sensor matrix, it can completely achieve a safe driving effect that is not inferior to the laser radar solution.
