Kim Yong sik, a core executive who once led the design of Samsung Electronics' System on Chip (SoC), is now serving as the dean of the newly established AI Semiconductor Design Graduate School at Kaeson University in South Korea, specializing in cultivating AI chip design talents.
This dean's resume is quite impressive. Not only did he lead SoC design at Samsung Electronics, but he also served as the chairman of the end-to-end AI semiconductor technology development project led by the South Korean Ministry of Industry and Commerce, with a budget of up to 800 billion Korean won (approximately 3.8 billion yuan).
This graduate school follows a practical approach, and the biggest difference from traditional universities is that graduates do not focus on their thesis, but rather on their projects.
Students in the 5th to 6th semesters will work on a project with a chip design company (fabless, a company that only designs without building factories), with the goal of producing practical results that can be patented.
There are 5 semiconductor design internships on campus, equipped with essential design automation (EDA) tools for chip design.
Employment is also more direct. Jiaquan University has signed contracts with seven chip design companies, including DeepX, Telechips, Mobilint, etc. After graduation, students can connect with these companies. If they want to start a business, the university will work together with the government and venture capital to support them.
The course lasts for 2 years and consists of 6 semesters, requiring a minimum of 36 credits. It covers the entire process from register transfer level (RTL) design to system chip composition and chip fabrication (sending design drawings to the factory for production), with the goal of directly getting started upon graduation.
AI chip design talent has become a scarce resource in the global competition, in addition to Jiaquan University, Seoul National University KAIST、 Hanyang University is also offering similar majors, and South Korea is accelerating efforts to fill this talent gap.
