In this era where the edge of AI can support various valuation myths, smartphones are naturally equipped with AI features. However, consumers do not seem to buy it, and Apple iPhones still cannot be used.
The Apple Intelligence feature, which has been delayed for nearly a year, can finally be implemented this year and will undoubtedly be an important selling point for the iPhone 18 series. However, consumers are not very excited about the Apple Intelligence feature.
According to a survey by UBS, only 24% of consumers upgrade their devices in advance due to the Apple Intelligence feature, which is 5 percentage points less than six months ago. However, 31% of consumers believe that this feature does not affect their purchasing decisions, which is 3 percentage points more than before.
As soon as they come and go, the potential users who switch phones due to the Apple Intelligence feature have decreased, and those who won't switch phones because of it have surpassed them. This cruel result is much more pessimistic than the analysts on Wall Street who advocate that Apple Intelligence will bring about a super cycle of iPhone replacement.
The good news is that the proportion of iPhones planned to be replaced within 12 months in the US market has increased to 20%, an increase of 3 percentage points. In the UK and Germany markets, it has increased by 6 or 4 percentage points. However, the Chinese market is not doing well, with only 15% of people willing to replace their iPhones, a decrease of 1 percentage point.
Consumers will not switch phones just because of Apple's Apple Intelligence feature, which is still the case with iPhones. If we investigate the Android camp, it is estimated that this proportion will only be lower, because the AI features on the Android camp will only be worse and more scattered than Apple's.
Consumers are not just unwilling to pay for the AI function of their phones. The AIPC that Microsoft heavily promoted in the past two years also faced pressure from consumers not to buy it. Recently, have we rarely seen manufacturers promote this selling point again? Earlier, some manufacturers even stated that they would not invest in this area, as consumers do not recognize AIPC and prefer to return to traditional experiences.
For AI, almost everyone believes that AI technology is still rapidly developing and will revolutionize various fields in the future. However, this does not mean that adding AI selling points to a certain device can make consumers accept and pay for it. Currently, AI phones and AIPCs seem to be unable to achieve this.
